McFarlane's The Fox Figure
|
Released in late July 2002. Discontinued October 2002 |

The Fox figure is the most impresive of the four. It is completely poseable. Packaged in the clamshell box, he comes complete with a pair of drum sticks, a drum stool, gong, gong holder, a floor tom and three attaching tom-toms. The red cape and the fake fox fur collar give the figure a style that is truely its own.
The packaging insures that all the parts will arrive intact. The close-up photo of the Fox's face shows the amazing detail of the figure. The drums sticks are taped to the box and all the other parts are nested into form fitting plastic and then held in place with twist ties.
This figure is the most agile of the set. Eric's neck turns from side to side and his arm's move up and down at the shoulder while his wrists can turn 360 degrees. He is able to swivel at the waist and there are joints at his hits (for sitting), at his thighs and knees so he is able to play the drums. This figure has the most joints and is the most limber of them all.
While the detail to the original Fox makeup is admireable, there are a few continuity issues. Eric never wore a red cape. This detail was probably taken from the photo shoot for the cover of People Magazine. A close look at the cover reveals that it's Gene's cape hanging behind Eric. Also, Eric always wore gloves when he was playing. In the Unmasked, Elder and Creatures eras (1980 to 1982) he wore black gloves. Eric was the shortest member of KISS at the time. His platforms were taller than the others so their height would be compatable. In the McFarlane series, The Fox has the shortest platforms.
This black and white photo shows us the detail of Eric's costume for the Palladium show. The McFarlane figures has cheated on a few details. Eric's fur collar was attached to his red jacket, not his jump suit. The real jumpsuit was sleeveless, while the figure has the long sleeve jumpsuit that Eric sometimes wore during the Creatures tour. The only time he played in long sleeves was during the "I Love it Loud" video and to tape a promo piece on Italian TV. Also borrowed from Creatures are Eri'c forearm cuffs. Specifically, the cuffs on the figure are the ones Eric wore only a handful of times, most noteably during the Creatures press conference. The difference between the Unmasked and Creatures version is the length of the cuff, the pattern of the stones and the number of stones. In addition, the belt doesn't have enough stones and the pattern is wrong, and the same is true for the rhinestones on his jumpsuit. There should be more around the chest cutout.
The lower half of the costume is more accuate than the upper. While we have already addressed the platform height issue, a closer look at the heel reveals that the rhinestone are missing completely. And probably because of the smaller platform size, the proper pattern on the front is only an outline on the figure. One last detail from the figure is missing: The rhinestones down the side of each leg. In reality, the band of rhinestones was several inches wide and rust in colour. There is no trace of these on the figure
Structurally, there are a two potential problems. First, the drum sticks can fall out of Eric's grip at times. A spot of Crazy Glue soon fixed that problem. Secondly, when you raise the arms overhead or turn the head too much, the fur trim pops out the shoulder sockets. Once again, Crazy Glue came to the rescue.
Even though there seems to be a lot of problems with the figure, it is well thought out, and strucutrally the best of the lot. If this is as good as it gets for Fox fans, then we don't have much to complain about
