McFarlane's Demon Figure

Released in late July 2002.
Also available in a 12 inch model

The demon figure must be manipulated carefully to keep it balanced with very limited movement. This is probably due to the knees being permently bend backwards. The figure is well packaged in a clamshell and twist tied into place. The bass guitar is detatchable, but you will run the risk of breaking the guitar strap hooks.

The packaging insures that all the parts will arrive intact. The close-up photo of the Gene's face is different that the actual figure because the figure is spitting blood. He comes anchored to the clamshell with twist ties. The bass guitar is easily strapped to him and ready to be played. The red background coresponds with the his signature colour.

This figure is the second best balanced of the front three. With his knees permently bent backwards, you must balance him with one foot back, between the claws of his boots. His cape doesn't touch the ground, so it can't help balance the figure. The neck moves slightly, but the hair obstructs the movement. His right arm has two joints: one at the shoulder and the other above the elbow. However, it if impossible to raise his hand above his head because the cape holds the arm back. Unlike the other figures, Gene is able to bend forward because of a joint near his ribs. And like the other figures, he swivels at the waist. Similar to Ace's figure, there is a joint at the hips and at the top of the boots.

The makeup job is well done, but the face isn't the right shape; it's missing the fullness. An addition to the costume is Gene's chocker - he never wore one with the Dynasty/Unmasked costume. The upper armour section is corret, right down to the horns on the arm and lower part of the breast plate. Moving to the arms, Gene's left hand should not have a glove on it when he plays. The only time he wore a glove on that hand was for promotion shots as it was impossable to play with a glove on. On both hands, but espcially his left, I thought the his hand was too long. It looks mis-shaped and elongated. The major mistake on this figure is the the midrift. On the figure it looks covered by his black jumpsuit. As you can see from the photos, Gene's had a bare midrift for this costume. The lower half of the figure's body is correct to the original costume.

Structually, there is little concern, unless you want to remove his guitar. If so, be extremely careful undoing the strap. I would have prefered a lot more joints, especially on the legs. If McFarlane had use the same joints as used on the Fox this would be a marvelous piece of work.

Remember, that it is easier to point out faults than it is to say something positive. All in all, this is an excellent representation of Gene Simmons during the Dynasty/Unmasked tour.
