McFarlane's Starchild Figure

Released in late July 2002

The starchild figure is almost impossable to keep upright without a stand or stage. This figure is poorly designed and the least realistic of the set. It comes with an Iceman guitar, microphone and mic stand. The guitar is detatchable, but you will run the risk of breaking the guitar strap hooks.

The packaging insures that all the parts will arrive intact. The close-up photo of the Paul's face is in the perfect pucker position. He comes anchored to the clamshell with twist ties. The guitar is easily strapped to him and ready to be played. The purple background coresponds with the his signature colour.

This figure is worst balanced of the set. Although it comes with a round stand, it wouldn't have been necessary if the boots were flat and further apart instead of lined up directly under the body. He must either be anchored on the stage or the black disc. Otherwise, it can be easily knocked down because it will balance only on one foot. Once you have the figure balanced, it's advisable to never touch it again. The neck moves slightly, but the hair obstructs the movement. His right arm has a wide range of movements, but it greatly affects the balance. The left arm moves up and down and both wrists turn. This helps Paul grab the mic or the guitar neck realively easily. As with the Ace and Gene figure, Paul's waist swivels, and his hips and boot move. The problem is that the hips only moves side to side and not back and forth. In addition, Paul's neck doesn't move.

The makeup job is well done and the face resemble's Paul's in makeup. Surpisingly, the upper body is correct to the original Unmasked costume - from the chocker to the jacket, feathers and fingerless gloves, although he usually didn't play wearing gloves. The Starchild's belt doesn't have enough stars of stones when compared to Paul's costume. Also, the stars and stones that ran down the outside of his legs are poorly represented. There are no stars down the side of his boots. When comparing the height of the figure's boots to a photo of Paul in his boots, it appears that McFarlane added copeous amounts of platform. I'm sure this doesn't help with the Starchild balanceing act. The Iceman guitar is almost correct. Paul used a black Iceman during the Unmasked tour, not the fractured mirrow one he used previously. The figure's guitar is nearly weightless. While the Ace and Gene figures also have very light guitars, it poses a particular problem with Paul - it rides up waaaay too high.

Structually, this is an unstable piece of work. After numerous crashes, my figure fell over and broke the guitar strap hook. Crazy Glue to the rescue. While the figure has fine detail, I find it extrememly frustrating that it must stay on the stand (which you didn't get if you bought the stage set). The only solution would be to have better joints at the hips, again, similar to the ones on The Fox figure. The idea of pointing into the audience is good, but the fingers on the left hand look unnatureal. They are supposed to be grasping the mic, but I have found it looks better to put the guitar neck in his left hand instead.

Personally, the balancing problem overshadows the good points about this figure and makes it easier to find other faults. All I can say is that I'm glad I bought it as part of the stage set, because if I had bought it individually, I would want my money back.
